Last year brought more generic medications to the prescription drug market. Unless a doctor specifically states otherwise in a prescription, the generic versions of the drugs can be used, helping to bring treatments costs down. Starting in 2014, a generic version of the pain killer OxyContin will be available. The entry of generics to the market was initially delayed after the FDA ruled that generics could only be sold in a new tamper-proof formula to deter prescription drug abuse. In December 2013, the FDA approved the first generic version of Cymbalta, a drug used to treat depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. Cymbalta is one of the top prescriptions in workers’ compensation claims and previously one of the more expensive drugs. Lidoderm became available in generic form in September 2013. Lidoderm is a patch containing topical analgesics designed for pain related to shingles, but often used off label for the treatment of other pain. This change in how medications can be dispensed could result in significant cost savings over the life of a workers’ compensation claim.
